Grand Military Gold Cup Day, Sandown Park, March 8th 2019...
To prepare you for the magic of the Cheltenham Festival next week, tomorrow sees Sandown Park stage the first part of it's two day meeting, beginning with Grand Military Gold Cup Day...
The Grand Military Gold Cup is a National Hunt Steeplechase open to horses aged 5 years upwards and run over approx. 3 miles, restricted to Military Amateur Riders and owners (serving or ex-serving) of the armed forces all 'In Pursuit of Glory'...
Below are my picks for the day, what I love most about Jump Racing... Anything can happen!
Race One, 2pm
10 runners declared and my first choice pick would be the obvious choice Precious Cargo, with Nico De Boinville riding for Nicky Henderson, he impressed on stable debut by winning at Kempton and I think he'll be the one to beat.. Another with potential is 6 yr old Jimmy The Digger with Andrew Tinkler on board, won impressively by 6L in a bumper at Ludlow last time out on the soft so could go well again
As with the jumps, I do like to see an outsider win and Episode could provide a surprise on stable debut for Gary Moore...
WIN- Precious Cargo
EW- Jimmy the Digger & Episode
Race Two, 2:30pm
Only 7 runners and I love a Grey so with Bonne Question the 10 yr old runner for Venetia Williams and the stunning looking Argyle for Gary Moore, I'm hoping for a 1-2! Kastani Beach would be my other pick, whose rider is Corporal Nathan Rahman. He is the first soldier from the Royal Welsh Regiment to ride in this race and broke his back only 3 months ago at a point - to - point meeting.
WIN- Argyle
EW- Bonne Question
Race Three, 3:05pm
10 runners with a few that catch my eye, firstly Pistol Whipped for Nicky Henderson, a Ā£110,000 purchase last October and won last month at Fakenham and a 3rd place before that at Newbury, I feel he has a lot of potential and is a very strong contender...Two for Gold with David Bass, Dan Mcgrue with the winning combo of Harry Cobden & Paul Nicholls is hard to ignore and Nordic Combined for David Pipe who quotes ''A good stayer on the level, the step-up in trip should suit and he is certainly better than he was able to show last time in the rescheduled Betfair Hurdle'' , are my other picks... I think Dan McGrue may just get the better of Pistol Whipped and is my choice ..
WIN- Dan McGrue
EW- Pistol Whipped / Nordic Combined
Race Four, 3:40pm
I can't wait to watch this race unfold as I am a huge fan of the 15yr old legend that is, Pete The Feat and will be cheering him on for the win! La Reve with Jody Sole in the saddle could see the girls celebrating International Womens Day with a win and then we have another David Pipe runner, in the form of 11 yr old veteran, Rathlin Rose with Guy Disney who won the race back in 2017, will they reclaim their crown? Mr Mercurial is certainly one to keep an eye on and feel he has the potential to win but has very decent e/w claims as well as 7 yr old Carlos Du Fruitier for the Ben Pauling yard who won the Royal Artillery Gold Cup last month but can he win both?? I'm sure he will be among the first few to nab a place...also good luck to the Jamie Snowden team with Vieux Lille..
WIN- Pete the Feat
EW- Mr Mercurial & Carlos Du Fruitier

Race Five, 4:10pm
I would love to see 11 yr old Rock On Rocky win this handicap chase and i'm rather biased when it comes to the name (happens to be my dogs name) :) Although I think E/W claims would be more realistic. Darebin for trainer Gary Moore & son Jamie looks likely to feature, my other pick would be the Philip Hobbs trained New Millenium.
WIN- Rock on Rocky
EW- Darebin & New Millenium

Race Six, 4:45pm
Duc De Beauchene with Barry Geraghty looks primed for the win. There is an Epsom trained runner in the form of Mazalto for Pat Phelan and Young Wolf would be my e/w pick, It's Got Legs - Gary Moore and Cold As Ice - Venetia Williams, meet again with the latter finishing behind in 4th to the formers 2nd place last time out...
WIN- Duc De Beauchene
EW- Young Wolf & It's Got Legs
